Happy New Year! Lots of changes happening for 2016! January 16th marked the opening of DNA: A Joint Exhibition by Sage the Artist and me! Here's the write up featured in the doorway of 670 Gallery in Hampton, VA:
Children raised by artists often decide upon a career in the creative arena. VG Waymer and Sage the Artist illustrate that point to the letter. They both say it is in your DNA.
Artist VG Waymer is trained as a fashion illustrator and works almost exclusively within the digital realm these days. Having been published in the NY Times Style section in 2015 she has simultaneously watched her son pursue a rising career as an abstract expressionist. Both artists regularly discussed creative concepts and worked out interesting solutions to each other's work however after Sage's "A Son Has Risen" (March 2015) show and an invitation to produce a joint show for 670 Gallery things definitely changed. This simple request wasn't just an invitation to show together but one to grow skills, experiences, media and concepts.
Sage the Artist is an innovative young artist with an eye focused towards the "next level." He is constantly testing the boundaries of his media and the construction of his pieces. From sculpture with found objects to working in large scale canvas Sage never seems to rest on his laurels. Recently featured at Norfolk's NEON Festival Sage is interested in working his special imagery within even larger pieces in this area and beyond.
DNA is the sum total of our creative relationship. Role reversal. Teacher/student. Mother/Son. It has been a journey of exploration and growth both as artists and as family.
So if you are in the Hampton VA area between now and February 6th please stop by 670 Gallery and check out our work. I'll be sure to keep you posted on future exhibitions, live paint events and workshops!
